Living Auckland
There are some things in Auckland that are simply not to be missed, and they’re not always the most spectacular. Sometimes, they are simple, everyday experiences that allow you to understand what it’s like to live here, to be an Aucklander. Others are experiences that are simply iconic. Here are a few ways delegates can get under the skin of the city:
Dine at the waterfront
Start your evening by choosing one of the stylish waterfront bars for an apéritif. Then wander around Viaduct Harbour or Princes Wharf and peruse the menus before choosing where to dine. Later, if you’re in the mood, pick a nightspot and dance the night away before ending the evening with a nightcap at Minus 5.
Take in a little history
Often in tucked-away places, you can still find reminders of Auckland in another age. And, luckily, many of them are now places where you can eat and drink. The Bluestone Room is one of the oldest buildings left in central Auckland. Starting out as a warehouse in the mid-19th century, it is now a welcoming and atmospheric pub. So are The Occidental in Vulcan Lane, and Galbraiths in Mt Eden Road.
Best view in town
Take the high-speed lift to the top of the Sky Tower in the heart of the city and (weather permitting) enjoy the most stunning views. On a clear day you can see almost the entire region, harbour to harbour, Waitakere to the Hunua Ranges and everywhere in between. Back on the ground, you’ll find countless cafés, restaurants and watering holes to choose from.
Catch your dinner
Fishing the blue waters of the Hauraki Gulf is a favourite pastime for many Aucklanders. Boat trips leave from many spots around Auckland, including Half Moon Bay. Not only might you catch a tasty snapper, or hard-fighting kingfish, you’ll also get to see many of the beautiful islands dotted around the Gulf.
Out-of-town playgrounds
If you can fit a night away in your schedule, then you’re in for a real treat. Two popular getaways for Aucklanders are The Bay of Islands in the north and the Coromandel Peninsula, south and east of the city. Both are natural paradises with all sorts of activities and attractions.
